The United Arab Emirates (UAE) has created a Ministry of Artificial Intelligence as part of a government restructuring. Omar bin Sultan al Olama, 27, was appointed by Prime Minister Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum.
“The next global wave is artificial intelligence and we want to be the best prepared country for it,” Sheikh Mohammed wrote on his Twitter account. He added that “the new government reflects the objective of the United Arab Emirates set in the capabilities of the future, science and technology.”
The prime minister has also announced the appointment of two new state ministers who will work on advanced science and food security. Sara al Amiri, 30, will be the State Minister of Advanced Sciences and will “lead the UAE mission to Mars.” A few months ago the country already announced that it will send an unmanned ship to the red planet in 2022.
With this, the government hopes to position the nation within the space race in which the United States, the European Union, China, Japan, Russia and other countries that also want to show their presence outside the Earth are involved.
